The 2021 cruise season at the Port of Seattle is now fully underway with scheduled passenger sailings. Until the season ends in October, residents will see ships coming into port to disembark passengers, load supplies, and embark passengers, and then sailing away for the next voyage. This busy cargo port handles cruises ships at two different piers along Elliott Bay, about three miles apart. These are Pier 91 (Smith Cove Terminal) and Pier 46 (Bell Street Terminal). Seattle is a haven for foodies and shoppers, offering a diverse range of dining and shopping experiences near its cruise ports. Both terminals are equipped to offer a smooth and enjoyable start to your cruise experience.

For a more unforgettable experience when visiting the city, try out a hot air balloon tour during sunrise or sunset. These tours tend to book quickly, so if this is something you want to do as the cherry on top of your cruise trip, then book early. The Seattle Underground Tour is one of Seattle’s most unique attractions.

Although Seattle cruise port is not as busy as the main cruise ports in the USA, such as Miami and Port Everglades, it handles over one million cruise passengers. Amazing experiences coming soon.

Passengers arriving at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) should anticipate a 25-minute drive to downtown's Pier 66 or a 35-minute drive to Pier 91. There are no cell phone waiting areas at the Bell Street/Pier 66 terminal, but there is one at the Smith Cove Terminal at Pier 91 for anyone waiting to pick up disembarking passengers. In August 2023, the Port's Commission approved US$32,6M budget for transforming the Ship Supply Building (Port's oldest, located at Fishermen’s Terminal)  into a Maritime Innovation Center. Seattle, with its proximity to Alaska and its excellent port facilities, became a natural choice for cruise lines looking to offer Alaskan itineraries. A pivotal moment in the history of Seattle’s cruise port came with the rise of Alaskan cruises. Or if you have longer, I’d strongly encourage a side trip to one of the nearby national parks, either Mt. Rainier or Olympic National Park.

Seattle’s cruise port is a hub for various prestigious cruise lines, offering a plethora of destinations that cater to diverse tastes. Arriving at the Seattle cruise ports is part of your adventure. The city also offers diverse shopping options, from high-end boutiques to unique local markets. Today, the cruise industry is a major contributor to Seattle’s economy. Construction works on Pier 46's "Terminal 5" started on March 13, 2019. The new facility can handle ULCV (ultra-large container vessels/boxships), supports ~6600 direct jobs and generates USD 2+ billion in annual business activities. From the US$ 340M, the private company SSA Terminals (subsidiary of SSA Marine Inc) contributed US$ 160M.

Prices are based on travel to Pier 91 Smith Cove cruise terminal and Bell Street Pier 66 in the downtown area. Located in Westlake Park, this elegant hotel was built in 1927, with opulent Queen Anne-style decor and a refined atmosphere. You’ll enjoy relaxing in the extra-deep soaking tub in your room, outfitted with free WiFi and coffeemakers, among other amenities. The hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of Pike’s Place Market, and a short distance from the downtown and other attractions.

Most commonly, cruises from Seattle go to exciting destinations such as Transatlantic, Alaska, Asia, Hawaii, and Panama Canal & Central America. Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) departs from Pier 66 (Bell Street Terminal) in Seattle, close to downtown. Over the last 20 years, it has had 3,200 ship calls, handled 14 million passengers and continues to be ranked Best North American Home Port and Top Rated Destination US and Canada by Cruise Critic. I hope you are able to plan and fulfill all of your fantastical travel dreams! Feel free to click around my site to discover more exciting destinations and itineraries. Whether you’re seeking the rugged beauty of Alaska, the charm of the Pacific Coast, or an epic journey through the Panama Canal, the options are as diverse as they are abundant.

After entering the market at 1st and Pike, your first stop should be Mee Sum Pastry to grab a BBQ pork bun (hom bao). Next make your way to Beecher’s Cheese where you can watch the cheese making process through the window while you wait in line for some cheese curds. And finally, no visit to Pike Place is complete without a Russian hand held pie from Piroshky, Piroshky. They have both savory and sweet options and my personal favorite is the Moscow roll.

Set on a breezy hill overlooking Lake Washington, Seattle’s Sound Garden has many musical, art and engineering constructions, such as pipes that whistle, howl and murmur when the wind blows through them. Part of the NOAA campus, admission is free, but security is tight, so bring a photo ID and enjoy the walk. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, take a ferry out to Bainbridge Island. Here, you will find the Bainbridge Island of Museum Art, Bainbridge Island Historical Museum, Fort Ward State Park, and Bainbridge Vineyards and Wineries. You will love the scenery, parks, trails, and attractions and are sure to find something free to do while visiting.

Check out my video with instructions on how to walk from downtown Seattle to the cruise terminal. If you try this, keep your eye out for sea lions, harbor seals, and bald eagles. Currently there are two cruise ship terminals in Seattle – one, the Bell Street Cruise Terminal, at Pier 66 and the other, the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal, at Pier 91. It was also announced a few years ago that plans for a third terminal at Pier 46 are underway – it seems my prolific lobbying efforts have paid off. Cruise lines have wheelchairs and attendants at the ready in the terminals for passengers needing temporary assistance getting through the terminal and to the ship.

You can find my recommendations for great beaches near downtown Seattle (several of which are accessible via public transit from downtown) here. A ride share is likely the most economical route if your travel party is two or more. An Uber will cost around $50 to Pier 91 (Smith Cove Cruise Terminal) from the Seattle airport. There is a designated area for ride-share cars at the terminal. A ride from the Seattle airport to Pier 66 and vice versa will usually cost around $45.

Remember, space in cruise cabins can be limited, so it’s wise to pack efficiently. Prioritize items based on the length of your cruise, the destinations you’ll be visiting, and the activities you plan to partake in. Whether you’re looking for luxury, affordability, or a unique boutique experience, you’ll find suitable accommodations in this vibrant city. The city and its cruise partners are committed to environmentally friendly practices, making it an ideal choice for eco-conscious travelers.

Every spring and summer, travelers from around the country and across the world flock to the Seattle waterfront to board cruise ships bound for Alaska. It really depends on how much time you wish to spend in Seattle. If you are visiting Seattle before your cruise, confirm which pier you are departing from and utilize a luggage service to store your bags during the day. To access cruise pier 66 and 91, you can consider the shuttle service at $20 per person each way.
